[留學sth] 美國工作簽證 OPT介紹與申請
(OPT是美國學位攻讀完畢後，可以合法留在美國找工作與工作的一項居留權，並非一個簽證。目前不論是否為STEM領域，一開始都是先發OPT一年，而STEM領域可以後續延長到三年)
九月參加了UWM學校國際學生辦公室(CIE/ISSS)舉辦的OPT講座，以下是來自講座中的筆記，供預計會使用到OPT的朋友們參考：
1. OPT is NOT a VISA
2. OPT includes Pre-completion OPT and Post-completion OPT.
3. To use Post-completion OPT, you need to have at least 1 year F-1 status.
4. Also, to apply Post-completion OPT MUST NOT have used 12 months of full-time CPT or more.
5. Early time to get involved in OPT: dissertation status. (Dec. 10)
6. Basically, 90 days before program completion and 60 days after program completion.
7. Don’t need a job to apply OPT (need at least 90 days to process, and typically it is 110-120 days)
8. An EAD card is issued by USCIS (after the average 90-day processing time)
9. OPT starts with 1 year period on both non-SETM/STEM
10. Since OPT starts, you have to get a job within 90 days during your first 1 year OPT period.
11. If you lose your job during the 1 year, you will have (90 – X) days since that time. X is the period that you spent finding a job after OPT begins.
12. To complete OPT process:
Download and complete forms from www.USCIS.gov
-> Assemble remaining required documents
-> Bring completed OPT application to ISSS (should make an appointment first)
-> Wait average 1 week for I-20 processing
-> Review completed packet and sign I-20
-> Mail completed packet to USCIS (your OPT packet MUST be received by USCIS within 30 days of the issue date)
13. What you need:
CIE/s OPT application form
-> Form I-765
-> Form G-1145
-> copy of I-94
-> Copy of passport, recent F-1 VISA and the most entry stamp
-> the other things… check www.USCIS.gov
14. After requested your OPT I-20:
will receive email from ISSS
-> make an appointment with ISSS for OPT application package
-> prepare personal check of $410.00
-> mail the OPT application package to USICS per instruction.
15. Student can ONLY begin working on OPT once the start date has arrived AND EAD card has been received.
16. Employment on OPT:
Must be directly related to major area of study
Must be more than 20 hours
Can work for more than 1 employer (E.g. if you get two part-time jobs)
Can be unpaid. (unpaid work/volunteering that may prohibit this type of work (E.g. work unpaid with the same advisor who had paid you TA/RA/PA before.)
17. You are responsible to maintain evidence of each position held during OPT.
18. Report your employment information to ISSS within 10 days after you start working.
19. You need to report to ISSS any address, name, and employment changes within 10 days these changes happen.
20. Keep in touch through OPT@uwm.edu
21. Travel during OPT:
You can travel up to your program completion date with a valid visa and travel signature.
After your program completion date, do NOT travel WITHOUT your EAD card and a job offer.
22. Best to travel with:
Updated I-20 with employer information and signed for travel by ISSS (only valid for 6 months)
A valid passport and VISA
EAD card
Letter of offer of employment and contract.
23. After OPT end date:
Within 60 days after completing OPT, the student must do one of the following: Depart the US
Apply for the change of status in the US
Transfer to another institution or status in the US
